How to install Veracrypt on Kali Linux

If you’re old school like me you’ll remember Truecrypt! A great open-source disk encryption software for Windows, Linux and OSX.

A while ago now, the maintainers of Truecrypt vanished if I remember correctly and there was a large third-party audit with no vulnerabilities found in the Truecrypt code.

However, Truecrypt was retired and Veracrypt was born.

Now you see cases like THIS where Veracrypt isn’t named but one can assume they’re using it. (By the way fuck that guy if the allegations are true which his sister is a witness so it’s hard not to believe).

This proves the value of Veracrypt although there are of course actual legitimate reasons to use the software, one of which IS NOT the exploitation of children.

In a way it reminds me of TOR where it’s used by criminals and professionals alike.

That said, if you’re trying to set up a secure encrypted hard drive (or volume) Veracrypt is the tool to do it.

Lets go through the steps of installing Veracrypt on your Kali box:

cd ~/Downloads

wget https://launchpad.net/veracrypt/trunk/1.25.9/+download/veracrypt-1.25.9-setup.tar.bz2

tar -xvf veracrypt-1.25.9-setup.tar.bz2

./veracrypt-1.25.9-setup-gui-x64

Click Install Veracrypt

Click I Accept

Enter your user password

Once it prompts, hit ENTER

That’s it!

To run it:

veracrypt

You can follow the prompts or use a tutorial like THIS to create a standard encrypted volume or THIS to create a hidden volume (which is a super cool thing, highly suggest using and reading about it)

If you ever want to uninstall Veracrypt you can do with the following:

cd /usr/bin
sudo ./veracrypt-uninstall.sh

END TRANSMISSION
